The Open Weave series centers on the idea of preservation. Gauze and wax are used to underline this theme on a material level. Gauze symbolizes care and healing; its open weave structure reflects the fleeting nature of life. Similarly, wax has long been used for preservation, particularly in relation to food.
This ongoing series explores the initial state of life. Cellular and biological forms are handled with gauze, as if the essence and its purest state are being carefully preserved.
Water plays a central role in the creation of these organic forms. Influenced by molybdomancy (kurşun dökme), a divination practice in Turkiye that involves melting lead and pouring it into Water to interpret the resulting shapes, I adapt this technique using wax. Water gives birth to amorphous structures. I also employ marbling, a technique of painting on the surface of Water, which further informs the flowing forms visible in the Open Weave series.
Through the inherited meanings of its materials and the use of Water as an active maker, the Open Weave series seeks to capture and preserve the essence of life.
